Roof Stain Removal-FAQ's

How long will algae-related stains stay off my roof once they are removed?

When we finish cleaning your roof, it will be as clean as a new roof. Since it's impossible to tell how long it will take for a new roof to get algae stains, the same holds true for a roof that has been cleaned of algae.

Why do these stains appear only on certain sections of my roof?

Most roof stains are caused by the growth of algae that feed on organic matter frequently found on roof surfaces.  The portions of a roof that receive the least amount of sunlight are more likely to have roof stains.

Can I use bleach on my shingles?

Many homeowners and contractors alike have tried to use bleach to remove the dark roof staining caused by algae.  This is not a good idea.  First of all bleach is a dangerous chemical that can damage vegetation and dry out your shingles.  Often, any results that the homeowner sees are just temporary and the staining is back within a few short months because the bleach merely addresses the surface algae and not the root system underneath the granules.

In addition, bleach around your home could void your termite treatment as chlorine neutralizes many of these chemicals.

Would it be smarter for me to just bite the bullet and get a new roof?

Some homeowners  have spent thousands of dollars on a new roof only to see the algae re-appear on the new shingles several years later.  Roof algae can re-appear even more quickly if the new shingles are put on top of the algae infested shingles.

Algae growth is an event that occurs in nature and it can, and does, grow on new shingles just as well as older ones.  The growth process begins when an airborne spore lands on the roof.  The algae then takes root and grows when the shingles it lands on are facing north or west (out of direct sunlight) and stay moist from morning dew or heavy shade.  Having your roof professionally cleaned costs a fraction of premature replacement.
